Celebrating Valentine’s Day Safely with your Parent
If you’re looking for a safe way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your aging parent, there are still plenty of options out there. You just might have to be a bit more creative than in the past. Especially if your parent is living on her own alone, she’ll really appreciate the chance to spend time with you or be remembered in a special way (if you are unable to join her physically on Valentine’s Day). Take a moment to think of the things that bring your parent joy and then develop some creative ways to celebrate the love the two of you share.
Does she love food?
If going out to eat has often been a big part of your parent’s way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, you might need to change that this Valentine’s Day to keep her safe and healthy. One option would be to order carry out from one of her favorite restaurants. Many restaurants are creating special holiday meals ready to be picked up and prepared from home. Either you or your homecare provider can help you parent place her order online and then also pick it up for her, and bring it back home. Make it a special night by using the best china and glassware your parent has. Light a candle, open a bottle of wine and ask your parent to share with you her favorite Valentine memories.
Does she love flowers?
Depending on what part of the country you are living in, you might be able to schedule a walk around an outdoor flower garden. Your parent will really enjoy walking alongside you and sharing stories of Valentines’ past and the flowers she may have received from her spouse or partner. Make it an interactive walk, helping her find those flowers now growing in the garden.
If the weather does not permit a lovely outdoor stroll, have her special flowers delivered to her door to brighten up her day. Ask your homecare provider to place them in water in a beautiful vase for a display your parent can enjoy for many days ahead.
Does she love time with family?
While the current health crisis has limited our time spent together, you may still be able to come up with creative ways for your parent to have a chance to say “I love you” to all of her cherished family members. Your homecare provider can help her log on to her computer or phone for a Zoom meeting or video chat through Messenger or Facetime. Or if the weather is permitting, you can encourage the children to create and deliver hand-made Valentine’s Day cards for your parent that reflects each person’s personality (mailing them will also work for those who live far away). A hand-made gift is always warmly appreciated. Even a simple phone call from all of her loved ones will surely make your parent’s Valentine’s Day joy-filled.
Don’t let the currently health crisis stop you from still making important connections with your aging parent and encouraging your other family members to do the same. Holidays can be especially sad for those without loving connections so even the simplest of offerings can create a day that is positive and filled with love for your parent.
