Elder Care: Security Upgrades Your Senior Needs
When seniors are aging in place security becomes a priority. Seniors need the security of being able to reach emergency help if they fall, or if there is a fire, or if they need medical attention. And home security is important too. Unfortunately seniors who live at home can become targets for criminals who assume that seniors will be easy to steal from. Even in safe neighborhoods where seniors know and depend on their neighbors it’s a good idea to invest in some security upgrades just to make sure that seniors are safe at home. Having elder care providers around adds to the security of your loved one.
The most commonly recommended security upgrades for seniors and their elder care aides are:
Video Doorbells
Video doorbells are easy to install and some don’t even need to be wired into the home. They operate on Wifi and can be up and running in minutes. Seniors can operate the doorbell through apps on smartphones or tablets. There are a lot of benefits to using video doorbells. Seniors can see who is at the door without having to get up and go to the door. Seniors can also address anyone at the door without having to go to the door. The camera starts recording as soon as anyone gets close so anyone that does come to the home is recorded, even at night. And you or your siblings can also monitor who is at the door through the app so that it will appear as if your senior parents are not home alone.
Security Cameras
Security cameras, like video doorbells, don’t have to be wired into the home’s existing wires and can be easily installed both outside and inside. Security cameras will allow you and your senior loved ones to keep an eye on the property and see any people or animals that approach the property. Because the cameras record automatically there will always be a video record of any person that comes near your senior loved one’s home. If your senior parents don’t want cameras installed inside the home there should at least be cameras outside the home near all the doors for safety.
Motion Detection Lights
Another home security staple that your senior loved ones should have are motion detection lights. These lights have automatic sensors that will turn the lights on anytime any motion occurs near the lights. Motion detection lights are a deterrent to anyone that comes on the property. They also provide security for your parents or for elder care providers who may arrive early in the morning or in the afternoon when it’s dark out. The lights will automatically turn on and light up dark garages, walkways, and other spaces so that the elder care provider or anyone else coming to the house will be able to see where they are going.
Panic Devices
Your senior loved ones should have wearable panic devices on them at all times in case they fall or need emergency medical help. Even with cell phones seniors need to have panic devices. They might not always be able to reach a cell phone or dial it. With a panic device they just need to touch a button and they can get immediate help.
