Senior Care Services for a Parent in Your Home
Sometimes the simplest solutions don’t actually work out the way you thought they would. One of those situations can include an aging parent who decides (or finally agrees) to move in with you. Even though you believe this would be the better situation for them, that doesn’t mean you can (or should) ignore senior care options.
An aging senior who has been struggling with certain aspects of daily life already might have trouble even in your home. Consider the basic challenges he or she has been facing for some time.
You didn’t invite them to come live with you simply because they were lonely. It was because they may no longer drive, their friends have moved or passed away, they are lonely, or you noticed them having trouble with some basic tasks.
None of that will change just because they move in with you.
Sure, they may now not feel as isolated and alone, especially if you and other people live in this house. However, they will still miss their friends. They will likely miss the connections they had with neighbors. They might miss the little things that made their house or apartment feel like home.
What often gets overlooked, though, when an aging senior moves in with an adult child and/or his or her family is that this is a completely different environment.
The longer you live in the same place, the more comfortable you become with the layout. Your body tends to know how much steps to the bathroom at night, even when your brain is still half asleep.
For an older senior, this transition can potentially lead to serious challenges and safety concerns.
You may also realize just being in the same house isn’t enough.
This aging senior might require assistance more and more as the months move along. You might be the primary caregiver for this elderly person, but what if you go to work? Or school? Or have other obligations that take you away from the house or keep you occupied?
Senior care in the form of a home care aide could very well be just as important now as it would have been if the aging senior stayed where they had been. This doesn’t mean (or imply) that this was the wrong move; it could very well have been the best move.
Just don’t overlook the importance and value of senior care, even though this aging family member finally decided to accept your invitation and moved in with you.
