What Do You Do If You Are an Essential Worker But Your Parents Live With You?

You’ve heard a lot of talk about staying home and self-isolating. Your parents live with you, and their safety is important. You’re also an essential worker and can’t stay home. Every time you leave the house, you worry about returning home and bringing COVID-19 with you. What are you supposed to do?

Wash Your Hands Regularly

Everyone in your home should be washing hands regularly. Scrubbing all areas of the hands and under the nails is important after coughing, sneezing, or blowing the nose. You need to wash your hands before, during, and after making meals. You should be washing hands after carrying in the mail, groceries, or other delivered items.

Cough and Sneeze Into the Elbow

In addition to COVID-19, allergy season is starting. People who are affected by pollen may be sneezing and coughing. Any sneeze or cough should be made into the crook of the elbow and not into the open air. If anyone coughs or sneezes into their hands or a tissue, wash hands immediately after and dispose of the tissue if needed.

Use an Air Purifier

Running an air purifier may reduce some of the contaminants in the air to help reduce allergens and dust that can trigger coughing and sneezing. If the unit is equipped with UV, it may also help kill germs.

Clean and Disinfect Surfaces Daily

Take a bleach wipe or disinfectant wipe to doorknobs, phones, and other hard surfaces every day. If you can’t find disinfectant wipes or sprays in stores, make your own.

Cut a roll of paper towels in half using a bread knife. Place the two halves in a gallon-size storage bag. Leave that bag open. In a bowl, mix a gallon of cool water with 1/3 cup of bleach. Pour some of that solution over the paper towels until they’ve fully absorbed the liquid. Add extra if needed.

Once thoroughly saturated, the cardboard tube will be easy to remove. Do that and seal the bag. Those bleach-covered paper towels can be used on light switches, doorknobs, phones, keyboards, remotes, and other hard surfaces.

It May Be Safer to Live Somewhere Else for Now

In some states, hotels are shut down to tourists and are only open for medical workers. If that’s your situation, it may be best to live away from your parents for now. While you’re isolated, work with an elderly care agency to make sure someone is stopping by to help your parents.

Elderly care aides can pick up groceries and prescriptions, make sure your parents are not showing signs of coronavirus, and cooking their meals. Caregivers can wipe down surfaces in your parents home, do the laundry, and offer companionship, too. Make arrangements by calling our elderly care agency.
